Grimstad has about 20,000 inhabitants, and with 3,500 students affiliated with UiA's campus, there is little doubt that students have an important place in the city! The campus in Grimstad is new and modern. It is characterized by short distances between students, staff and working life. The town has long traditions and is characterized by its charming white Sørland houses, narrow streets and alleys. The archipelago has beautiful islands and islets where you can go ashore and enjoy nice days.
It is just over a kilometer between the campus and Grimstad town. Grimstad is known for many things, including cycling (Dag Otto Lauritzen and Thor Hushovd) and literature (Ibsen and Hamsun). It is also known as a technology town and has the "Technology Park" connected to the campus where, among others, Ericsson has for many years developed groundbreaking technology and solutions that the whole world uses. With the new Mechatronic Innovation Lab, Grimstad has gained another important player that further reinforces its status as a technology city.
At the university's campus in Grimstad, students are spread across six faculties and the Department of Teacher Education. The majority of students in Grimstad study in the fields of technology and health sciences. It is a short distance from the lecture rooms to the student accommodation, student kindergarten and the students' cultural center Bluebox. Bluebox is a pub, café and concert venue. Approximately 100 volunteers run the place and make it a place where everyone feels at home. In addition to Bluebox, several nightlife venues ensure a lively nightlife in the streets of the city center!
Near the campus you will find a number of other exciting and pleasant offers. The variety of food and drink is great. There is a good selection of different eateries and outlets selling local produce if you want to cook your own food. At Groos there are wonderful opportunities to kill sunny days with swimming from a fantastic beach, volleyball, football, summer restaurant and more. Just outside the city center is Dømmesmoen, a beautiful park with trees, shrubs and flowers. Dømmesmoen is an old cultural landscape with burial mounds and stone settlements, and not least a number of beautiful hiking trails that are well signposted.
